Illness-Related Stigma in the Israeli Press: A Study of Media Coverage of Severe Physical Illnesses

Results: ‘Very stigmatized’ illnesses received more coverage, and appeared in weekend or holiday editions, on the front page, in articles that mention lifestyle related risk factors or represented foreigners as placing others at risk for illness. Stigmatized illnesses also tended to be represented metaphorically, where they were used as symbols for negative social phenomena, or described by military and apocalyptic metaphors.
